When given a prompt, it generates a response by selecting, one word at a time, from words that are likely to come next. Picking the most probable choice every time wouldn’t lead to very creative responses, so there’s some flexibility factored in. We continue to see that the more people use them, the better LLMs get at predicting what responses might be helpful. An initial version of Gemini starts to roll out today inside Google’s chatbot Bard for the English language setting.

When Google Bard first launched almost a year ago, it had some major flaws. Since then, it has grown significantly with two large language model (LLM) upgrades and several updates, and the new name might be a way to leave the past reputation in the past. Google renamed Google Bard to Gemini on February 8 as a nod to Google’s LLM that powers the AI chatbot. “To reflect the advanced tech at its core, Bard will now simply be called Gemini,” said Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, in the announcement. No subscription plan has been announced yet, but for comparison, a monthly subscription to ChatGPT Plus with GPT-4 costs $20. The is one of the top chatbot platforms that was awarded the Loebner Prize five times, more than any other program.

After answering a question about return policies, the assistant recognizes the shopper may be ready for a purchase and asks if it should generate a shopping cart. The user confirms, and the site immediately navigates to a checkout process. The assistant then asks if the shopper needs anything else, with the user replying that they’re interested in switching to a business account.

Before bringing it to the public, we ran Gemini Pro through a number of industry-standard benchmarks. Other buttons let you give a thumbs up or thumbs down to a response—important feedback for Google. Language might be one of humanity’s greatest tools, but like all tools it can be misused. Models trained on language can propagate that misuse — for instance, by internalizing biases, mirroring hateful speech, or replicating misleading information. And even when the language it’s trained on is carefully vetted, the model itself can still be put to ill use. After all, the phrase “that’s nice” is a sensible response to nearly any statement, much in the way “I don’t know” is a sensible response to most questions. Satisfying responses also tend to be specific, by relating clearly to the context of the conversation. More recently, we’ve invented machine learning techniques that help us better grasp the intent of Search queries.

Click “Google it” to see suggestions for queries, and Search will open in a new tab so you can find relevant results and dig deeper. We’ll also be thoughtfully integrating LLMs into Search in a deeper way — more to come. Ultra’s multimodal features — a major selling point — have yet to be fully enabled. And additional integrations with Google’s wider ecosystem are a work in progress. Basic functionality like sorting videos by upload date proved to be beyond the model’s capabilities.

But highly developed bots require more technical programming skills. You can also publish it on messaging channels, such as LINE, Slack, WhatsApp, and Telegram. So, you can add it to your preferred portal to communicate with clients effectively.

One of the best ways to find a company you can trust is by asking friends for recommendations. The same goes for chatbot providers but instead of asking friends, you can read user reviews. Websites like G2 or Capterra collect software ratings from millions of users. They give you a pretty good understanding of how the company deals with complaints and functionality issues. But this chatbot vendor is primarily designed for developers who can create bots using code. This chatbot development platform is open source, and you can use it for much more than bot creation.

It released Bard, its first AI chatbot, in early 2022, though it later folded that into its family of large language models that it calls Gemini. Back in the 2000s, the company said it applied machine learning techniques to Google Search to correct users’ spelling and used them to create services like Google Translate. Yes, as of February 1, 2024, Gemini can generate images leveraging Imagen 2, Google’s most advanced text-to-image model, developed by Google DeepMind. All you have to do is ask Gemini to “draw,” “generate,” or “create” an image and include a description with as much — or as little — detail as is appropriate. Then, in the following decade, Google acquired DeepMind, at the time a little-known AI research company. Bard gets its biggest upgrade yet with Gemini

In its July wave of updates, Google added multimodal search, allowing users the ability to input pictures as well as text to the chatbot. Android users will have the option to download the Gemini app from the Google Play Store or opt-in through Google Assistant. Once they do, they will be able to access Gemini’s assistance from the app or via anywhere that Google Assistant would typically be activated, including pressing the power button, corner swiping, or even saying “Hey Google.” If you don’t like the answer to your question, scroll down to the bottom of the page and use the thumbs down button, indicating a bad response.

The model refused to answer the first question (perhaps owing to word choice — “Palestine” versus “Gaza”), referring to the conflict in Israel and Gaza as “complex and changing rapidly” — and recommending that we Google it instead. Alexei Efros, a professor at UC Berkeley who specializes in the visual capabilities of AI, says Google’s general approach with Gemini appears promising. “Anything that is using other modalities is certainly a step in the right direction,” he says. Collins says that Gemini Pro, the model being rolled out this week, outscored the earlier model that initially powered ChatGPT, called GPT-3.5, on six out of eight commonly used benchmarks for testing the smarts of AI software.

Gemini, Google’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot, is here. While it’s a solid option for research and productivity, it stumbles in obvious — and some not-so-obvious — places. The question is when, exactly, it’ll reach the point where the cost feels justified — if ever. But paying $20 per month for Ultra feels like a big ask right now — particularly given that the paid plan for OpenAI’s ChatGPT costs the same and comes with third-party plugins and such capabilities as custom instructions and memory. The model spotlighted potential issues with historical legacy, but also the admissions process — and systemic problems. You’d think U.S. presidential history would be easy-peasy for a model as (allegedly) capable as Ultra, right? Ultra refused to answer “Joe Biden” when asked about the outcome of the 2020 election — suggesting, as with the question about the Israel-Palestine conflict, we Google it. Ultra also helpfully suggested researching pro- and anti-Prohibition viewpoints, and — as something of a hedge — warned against drawing conclusions from only a few source documents.

One of the current strengths of Bard is its integration with other Google services, when it actually works. Our previous tests of the Bard chatbot showed potential for these integrations, but there are still plenty of kinks to be worked out. Ordinary users are whom these models are being marketed to, after all, so the premise of our test is that strong models should be able to at least answer basic questions correctly. Google showed several demos illustrating Gemini’s ability to handle problems involving visual information. One saw the AI model respond to a video in which someone drew images, created simple puzzles, and asked for game google’s chatbot ideas involving a map of the world. Two Google researchers also showed how Gemini can help with scientific research by answering questions about a research paper featuring graphs and equations. But for $19.99 a month, users can access Gemini Advanced, a version the company claims is “far more capable at reasoning, following, instructions, coding, and creative inspiration” than the free one.

That version, Gemini Ultra, is now being made available inside a premium version of Google’s chatbot, called Gemini Advanced. Accessing it requires a subscription to a new tier of the Google One cloud backup service called AI Premium. Typically, a $10 subscription to Google One comes with 2 terabytes of extra storage and other benefits; now that same package is available with Gemini Advanced thrown in for $20 per month.

The actual performance of the chatbot also led to much negative feedback. Previously, Gemini had a waitlist that opened on March 21, 2023, and the tech giant granted access to limited numbers of users in the US and UK on a rolling basis. Using Gemini inside of Bard is as simple as visiting the website in your browser and logging in. Google does not allow access to Bard if you are not willing to create an account. Users of Google Workspace accounts may need to switch over to their personal email account to try Gemini.

How do I access Gemini?

Although it’s important to be aware of challenges like these, there are still incredible benefits to LLMs, like jumpstarting human productivity, creativity and curiosity. And so, when using Bard, you’ll often get the choice of a few different drafts of its response so you can pick the best starting point for you. You can continue to collaborate with Bard from there, asking follow-up questions.

Design the conversations however you like, they can be simple, multiple-choice, or based on action buttons. Chatbot platforms can help small businesses that are often short of customer support staff. Especially for someone who’s only about to dip their toe in the chatbot water.

That architecture produces a model that can be trained to read many words (a sentence or paragraph, for example), pay attention to how those words relate to one another and then predict what words it thinks will come next. We are also continuing to add new features to Enterprise Search on Gen App Builder with multimodal image search now available in preview. With multimodal search, customers can find relevant images by searching via a combination of text and/or image inputs.

We’re releasing it initially with our lightweight model version of LaMDA. This much smaller model requires significantly less computing power, enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback. We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information. We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed.

Beyond our own products, we think it’s important to make it easy, safe and scalable for others to benefit from these advances by building on top of our best models. Next month, we’ll start onboarding individual developers, creators and enterprises so they can try our Generative Language API, initially powered by LaMDA with a range of models to follow. Many Google Assistant voice features will be available through the Gemini app — including setting timers, making calls and controlling your smart home devices — and we’re working to support more in the future. It might be difficult for users to notice the leaps forward Google says its chatbot has taken. Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor at Arizona State University who focuses on AI, says discerning significant differences between large language models like those behind Gemini and ChatGPT has become difficult.

Initially, Gemini, known as Bard at the time, used a lightweight model version of LaMDA that required less computing power and could be scaled to more users. Today we’re launching Gemini Advanced — a new experience that gives you access to Ultra 1.0, our largest and most capable state-of-the-art AI model. In blind evaluations with our third-party raters, Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0 is now the most preferred chatbot compared to leading alternatives. When Google first unveiled the Gemini AI model it was portrayed as a new foundation for its AI offerings, but the company had held back the most powerful version, saying it needed more testing for safety.

For example, if the user starts to type “How does the 7 Pro compare,” the assistant might suggest, “How does the 7 Pro compare to my current device? ” If the shopper accepts this suggestion, the assistant can generate a multimodal comparison table, complete with images and a brief summary. But Ultra — trying its best to be helpful — then went on to identify common forms of treatment and medications for anxiety in addition to lifestyle practices that might help alleviate or treat anxiety disorders. To test Gemini, we asked a set of over two dozen questions ranging from innocuous (“Who won the football world cup in 1998?”) to controversial (“Is Taiwan an independent country?”). Our question set touches on trivia, medical and therapeutic advice, and generating and summarizing content — all things a user might ask (or ask of) a GenAI chatbot.

We’re also exploring dimensions like “interestingness,” by assessing whether responses are insightful, unexpected or witty. Being Google, we also care a lot about factuality (that is, whether LaMDA sticks to facts, something language models often struggle with), and are investigating ways to ensure LaMDA’s responses aren’t just compelling but correct. Unless prohibited by a nofollow-tag, it then follows these links to other web pages. New web pages must be linked to from other known pages on the web in order to be crawled and indexed, or manually submitted by the webmaster.

That new bundle from Google offers significantly more than a subscription to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 a month. The service includes access to the company’s most powerful version of its chatbot and also OpenAI’s new “GPT store,” which offers custom chatbot functions crafted by developers. For the same monthly cost, Google One customers can now get extra Gmail, Drive, and Photo storage in addition to a more powerful chat-ified search experience. Gemini is also getting more prominent positioning among Google’s services. It will have its own app on Android phones, and on Apple mobile devices Gemini will be baked into the primary Google app.

So today we’re starting to roll out a new mobile experience for Gemini and Gemini Advanced with a new app on Android and in the Google app on iOS. Google probably has a long way to go before Gemini has name recognition on par with ChatGPT. OpenAI has said that ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users, and has been considered one of the fastest-growing consumer products in history since its initial launch in November 2022. OpenAI’s four-day boardroom drama a year later, in which cofounder and CEO Sam Altman was fired and then reinstated, hardly seems to have slowed it down. Now Google is consolidating many of its generative AI products under the banner of its latest AI model Gemini—and taking direct aim at OpenAI’s subscription service ChatGPT Plus. As you experiment with Gemini Pro in Bard, keep in mind the things you likely already know about chatbots, such as their reputation for lying.

In February 2024, Google paused Gemini’s image generation tool after people criticized it for spitting out historically inaccurate photos of US presidents. The company also restricted its AI chatbot from answering questions about the 2024 US presidential election to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation. And, in general, Gemini has guardrails that prevent it from answering questions it deems unsafe. The model comes in three sizes that vary based on the amount of data used to train them. Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google’s most advanced model to date, is now available on Vertex AI, the company’s platform for developers to build machine learning software, according to the company. And that’s why access to Bard is currently limited, so early testers can use the chatbot, provide feedback to developers and help Google improve the AI technology.
